What’s the best time for a Session?

I often get asked what the best time to book a session is. This is a broad question because there are so many factors to consider. But... being a location photographer, we rely solely on the natural light available. This means that the harshest light, in the middle of the day, is not always best! It creates a hard light which is generally not flattering, very bright and often just not very nice! Now, in stating this... that is just a general rule. Of course that is all subject to the location and how much cloud cover, tree cover etc there is.

Generally speaking though, I like to book sessions either early morning (sunrise up to 2hours after) or 1-2 hours before the sun sets. This is when the most beautiful light comes through and creates a soft and natural glow. This is of course, for locations outdoors. If you choose to have your session in my lifestyle studio, then we have a little more flexibility because the sun isn't directly over us!

My absolute favorite time top photograph outdoors, is what we call 'the golden hour'. This is the hour before sunset where the light is a perfect gold. In winter, this can be a little cold... but oh so very worth it! In summer (in Queensland anyway) it can still be 30 degrees... so this is the ideal time, because the hot summer sun isn't beating down and making our makeup run! (Your makeup that is... because I tend not to wear any for photo sessions, unless it's a wedding, because I'm moving around so much that I sweat it off and look like a worn out panda!)

Light plays such an important role in how the photograph turns out. Too bright, and it can be too harsh and very unflattering. We all want to look our best when it comes to our forever memories... and this is why we suggest these times. I know that it can sometimes be a pain in the butt if you have littles that aren't too happy at that time of day! But we can most definitly work around whats best for you and your family <3
